The Short Version

Luxury Yacht Charter, Explained

A yacht charter is the private hire of a crewed yacht for a set period — usually a week — with the vessel and its crew reserved exclusively for your group. YachtCloud arranges luxury yacht charters across the Mediterranean: crewed gulets, motor yachts, catamarans and sailing yachts in Greece, Croatia, Turkey, Italy and beyond. Every charter is booked by enquiry, so availability and pricing are confirmed for your exact dates.

Unlike a fixed cruise, the route is planned around you. A professional captain and crew handle navigation, cooking and service while you set the pace — from island-hopping and secluded swim stops to harbour dinners ashore.

Why YachtCloud Specialises in Luxury Gulets

We charter every type above, but gulets are where we started and where we know the fleet and crews best. Their wide decks, generous cabins and full crew service make them the most sociable way for families and groups to cruise the Mediterranean — usually at a lower weekly rate than a motor yacht of comparable size. Read our guide to gulet yachts or compare the charter types side by side.

Frequently Asked

Yacht Charter FAQ

What is a yacht charter?
A yacht charter is the private hire of a yacht and its crew for a set period, usually a week. The yacht is yours alone for the duration — there are no other guests aboard — and the route is planned around your group rather than a fixed schedule. Charters are arranged by enquiry rather than instant booking, so availability and the final price are confirmed for your specific dates.
How does the yacht charter booking process work?
You send an enquiry with your dates, group size, preferred destination and any yacht in mind. We come back with a shortlist of available yachts and indicative pricing, then confirm the details — itinerary, extras and terms — in writing. A deposit secures the booking, with the balance due before embarkation. From first enquiry to a firm proposal usually takes about 24 hours.
Which destinations can I charter a yacht in?
Our core Mediterranean cruising grounds are Greece, Croatia, Turkey, Italy and Montenegro, each with its own coastline, islands and sailing season. Greece and Turkey suit island-hopping, Croatia offers short hops between walled towns, and Italy pairs the Amalfi Coast and Sardinia with strong food and nightlife. We also arrange charters beyond the Mediterranean on request.
What types of yacht can I charter?
Our fleet covers gulets, motor yachts, motor sailers and catamarans. Gulets are traditional wooden vessels with wide decks and a relaxed pace, motor yachts prioritise speed and contemporary interiors, motor sailers combine both, and catamarans offer exceptional stability and space above deck. Every yacht is chartered with a professional crew.
What is included in a gulet charter?
A luxury gulet charter typically includes the yacht, professional crew (captain, chef, steward), all meals and snacks, water sports equipment, bed linen, and towels. Beverages, fuel, port fees, and crew gratuities are usually additional.
What is the best time to charter a gulet?
The best time for a Mediterranean gulet charter is May through October. Peak season runs from mid-June to mid-September with the warmest waters and best weather. Shoulder season (May-June, September-October) offers quieter anchorages and lower prices.
How many guests can a gulet accommodate?
Most luxury gulets accommodate between 6 and 16 guests across 3 to 8 en-suite cabins. Smaller gulets offer a more intimate experience while larger vessels are ideal for groups, families, or corporate events.
How far in advance should I book?
We recommend booking 6-12 months in advance for peak summer season (July-August). For shoulder season or flexible dates, 3-6 months is often sufficient. Last-minute availability can sometimes be found but the selection of gulets will be more limited.
What is the difference between a gulet and a motor yacht?
Gulets are traditional wooden sailing yachts originating from Turkey, offering spacious decks, warm wooden interiors, and a relaxed sailing experience. Motor yachts are typically faster with modern finishes. Gulets are ideal for slow-paced, immersive coastal cruising and provide a uniquely authentic Mediterranean feel.
How much does a gulet charter cost?
Luxury gulet charter prices typically range from €15,000 to €50,000 per week depending on the vessel size, season, destination, and number of guests. This usually includes the crew, meals, and use of water toys. Additional costs may include fuel, port fees, and gratuities.
What costs are not included in the charter fee?
The charter fee covers the yacht and its crew. Running costs are billed separately and commonly include fuel for the yacht and tender, port and marina fees, harbour taxes, and any berth charges along the route. Drinks are often charged on consumption, and a crew gratuity is customary but discretionary. We set these out in writing before you commit, so nothing appears unexpectedly.
Which Mediterranean destination should I choose?
Greece suits island-hopping and archaeology, with the Cyclades for classic scenery and the Ionian for calmer water. Croatia offers short hops between walled towns along the Dalmatian coast. Turkey's Turquoise Coast has sheltered bays and is the traditional home of the gulet. Italy pairs the Amalfi Coast and Sardinia with strong food and nightlife. We also arrange charters well beyond the Mediterranean — tell us the kind of trip you want and we will match the cruising ground to it.
Can I customise the itinerary?
Yes. Sample routes are starting points, not fixed schedules. Your captain adapts the plan day by day around the weather, sea state and what your group feels like doing, and you can spend longer somewhere you like or skip a stop entirely. The only real constraints are safe cruising distances and your embarkation and disembarkation ports.
Do I need sailing experience to charter a yacht?
No. Every yacht in our fleet is chartered fully crewed, so a qualified captain handles navigation and the crew run the yacht day to day. You need no licence, no experience and no involvement in operating the vessel. Guests who want to get hands-on are usually welcome to help under the captain's direction.
How do I choose the right yacht for my group?
Start with the number of guests and the cabin configuration you need, since that rules most options in or out. Then consider pace — gulets and motor sailers suit relaxed coastal cruising, motor yachts cover more ground in a day, and catamarans give the most deck and living space per metre. Tell us your group size, dates and the destination you have in mind, and we will send a shortlist rather than asking you to work through the whole fleet.
